moments after hopping into a tiny, old pickup truck to be driven to my new home (by vedant, the leader of the eli africa organization, fellow yalie, and native mauritian). i’m obviously ecstatic at this point, poking my head out the window to gaze at all the interesting people and plants and buildings we pass by. i felt immediately like immersed in some sort of argentina-on-steroids, in which the brightness and beauty of argentina was all around me in an even more saturated (and exotic!) form. feels so right. :)
i’m living with a handful of other yalies in a charming village called plain de papaye, located in northern mauritius. i love its simplicity. i love its colors. i loved its people even before i started meeting them. here women walk about in vibrant robes while young school kids roam about in uniforms. the streets are narrow, and drivers go fast. one can meander quite easily through tiny shops and eateries, or stop at a number of small fruit and veggie stands for (ridiculously fresh and wonderfully organic) produce. i’m still waiting to go on an expedition through the tall sugar cane fields that weave themselves through the village. they strike me as mysterious and magnificent. people here smile. a bag of fresh bread each morning is less than a dollar. things are simple. things are great.
